Online News Landscape Still Changing

Nielsen Net Ratings On Online News Sites for June 2005

While on the one hand we have exponential growth of consumer generated media, we also have online news consumers becoming their own editors. They're no longer wililng to depend on a single news organization's vision of the news.

To reach your audience you have to know know where they get their news.   Here are the latest figures from Nielse/Net Ratings for the top online news sites

  1. Yahoo! News (24.9 million visitors in June 2005)
  2. MSNBC (23.8 mln)
  3. CNN (21.4 mln)
  4. AOL News (17.4 mln)
  5. Gannett Newspapers (11.4 mln)
  6. New York Times (11.2 mln)
  7. Internet Broadcasting (10.9 mln)
  8. Knight Ridder Digital (9.9 mln)
  9. Tribune Newspapers (9.0 mln)
  10. USA Today (8.6 mln)
  11. Washington Post (8.5 mln)
  12. ABC News (7.7 mln)
  13. Google News (7.2 mln)
  14. Hearst Newspapers Digital (6.9 mln).

One fifth of all news readers now get their news exclusively online. Aggregators and feeds allow readers to select only the topics they care about.  And the preference to read a trusted 'newsmaster' source - often a blogger or a friend who passes on news items via email - is on the rise.
