Sony Joins The Rush To Embrace Online Video

Another user-generated site bought by big media.

Grouper, one of a number of YouTube wanna-bes,  hit the jackpot when they caught the eye of Sony.

Grouper has attracted a following of millions of fans - and they are not just passive viewers of Web-based videos.  Grouper fans are creators of videos that  can be shared withothers and downloaded to portable video-playing devices.  Source: Reuters via Yahoo News 

The acquisition aims to infuse the studios with new ideas and talent for movies, television shows and games, a top Sony executive said.

Analyst comment:

Just as News Corp buying MySpace gave social networking legitimacy, this is a deal that adds huge legitimacy to the consumer generated media space.  Allen Weiner, Gartner Inc.

If your PR plan doesn't have a social media component, it's way past time.  You need to figure out how you can reach these online audiences and join the conversation.
